Environmental Law & Participation
The department environmental law & participation has two main focuses. The first focus is to make effective environmental law accessible for environmental lawyers and concerned citizens. The second focus is to review the applicability of environmental law in the practice through the means of empirical studies. We have come closer to attaining our goal in many ways. Since 1991, we have worked on various legal problems in environmental protection and have been mostly project-oriented.
Project-oriented, the department's work is done mostly through projects that receive individual funding. These projects are arranged independently and address one of the following main topcis. These topics are the pillars of our work:
• Leading consulting and educational projects in Germany and abroad (including Moldova, Poland, the Czech Republic and Vietnam)
• Advocating the implementation of the Aarhus Convention for effective public participation in Germany
• Writing books, brochures and leaflets
• Conducting seminars and conferences on public participation in environmental law
• Coordinating the initiative "Legal Protection Against Noise and Air Pollution" on Berlin's road traffic
Research concentrations:
• Empirical research in environmental law concentrating on ensuring public participation and exercising legal recourse by filing suit
• Policy and historical research into the German Democratic Republic's environmental past
• Reports and studies in environmental law
