Nano technologies - impacts on environment and nature
Time frame: 04/2011 - 06/2012
Funded by: Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Berlin/Bonn
UfU is organizing a citizens´ consultation on " Nano technologies - impacts on environment and nature" as part of the complex research project DaNa ("Acquisition, evaluation and public-oriented presentation of society-relevant data and findings relating to nanomaterials").
DaNa aims at the collection, summary and comprehensible presentation of scientific results from major publicly funded projects related to nano technologies (e.g. the NanoCare and NanoNature programms).
The following institutions are part of the DaNa project: Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (DECHEMA), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ, Leipzig), Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS, Dresden) and Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA).
A citizens´ consultation (also: "citizens´ conference") is a participative method aiming at the evaluation of new technologies and scientific developments by informed non-professionals. The method relates to the so called consensus conference, which up to now has been applied on national and international level.
The framework of the citizens´ consultation offers a randomly chosen group of citizens the possibilty to take part in a process comprising several weekends. During the time span of the consultation, the participants are provided with a thorough overview on nano technologies and the questions in the current discussions.
