Berlin Climate School 2011 competition awards handed over

The title "Berlin Climate School" was awarded for the third time at a celebration event at the end of the school year. The 1-st prize went to the climate saviour team from Droste Hülshoff High School. The eight team members coming from different forms organised the project day "Climate Change – It's gonna get hot" for the whole school. They developed the content of the day, found speakers, e.g. from environment organisations, and ensured a smooth process on the day coordinating43 workshops.

The Mühlenau Primary School was awarded the second prize for the project "Completely Leafless". All classes of the school dealt with different aspects of the topics climate, forest and paper. The most prominent result of the project was a 4m² model of a forest with an eco-house and a paper mill. Apart from this, there was an energy rally, research into the use of paper at the school etc. A 6-th form of Nehring Primary School won the third prize for its project „Climate Protection is everybody's task! Join in! Save Energy! Yapalım beraber! Energiyibiriktirmek!". The pupils researched practical energy related subjects and told their parents and friends about their results, both in German and in Turkish.

The Senator for Health, Environment and Consumer Protection, Katrin Lompscher, and Claudia Zinke, State Secretary for Education, Youth and Family, awarded the winners together with Dr. Bernhard Gause, Member of the Executive Board of the German Insurance Association (GDV), und Marco Vollmar from the Management Board of WWF Germany. The prize-giving ceremony was facilitated by Karsten Schwanke (science journalist at the TV station ZDF), who as certified meteorologistis also chairman of the jury of the competition.

Altogether 2000 pupils took part in the competition for the title of "Berlin Climate School 2011"; eleven schools won this popular label this year.
