SiteChar – Characterisation of European CO2 storage
In this project, the UfU is examining which geological, economic, ecological and social prerequisites must be fulfilled before a company can be issued a permit to store CO2 underground. A consortium of 17 partners from nine European countries is jointly elaborating guidelines for characterizing possible storage sites, assessing risks and monitoring CO2 storage.
The UfU and the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands ECN are collaborating on the issue of advancing public awareness. The object of study is the perception of the technology on the ground, using the examples of two potential CO2 storage sites in Poland and Scotland. Employing newly developed participation methods and a series of information events, the project is to empower the local population to form an opinion concerning CO2 storage independently and in abalanced fashion.
