Three4Climate

The “Three4Climate” project supports climate protection activities during the EU Presidency Trio Germany-Portugal-Slovenia. These activities promote multi-level cooperation for climate action and translate the trio presidency into concrete cooperation. An important basis for the project is the outcome of the EU Council in December 2019, which “confirms the goal of a climate-neutral EU by 2050 in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement”.

The project will involve various stakeholders and decision-makers relevant to trilateral climate action. Government levels, as well as cities and schools from the three countries, will be at the centre, networking both horizontally (between cities) and vertically (from local to EU level). Local, national and European decision-makers will be provided with a platform to connect and discuss key elements of climate action, understand each other’s interests and positions, and come to a common understanding of the challenges and possible solutions for a climate-neutral future. It provides an opportunity to showcase actors at the local level, such as cities and schools, who are pursuing ambitious climate action, to strengthen their interaction beyond the national level and to learn from each other. The specific activities will be aligned with the common environmental policy priorities of the EU Presidency trio and will take place in the context of ongoing policy developments at EU level, in particular the European Commission’s Green Deal.

The focus of the Independent Institute for Environmental Education will be on mentoring the participating schools. Planned activities include a teacher exchange, a joint climate action day, a climate competition and a final conference. The first teacher exchange to Germany has already been replaced by a Three4Climate online campus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This gives teachers the opportunity to get to know each other, network and plan further activities together. Students also had the opportunity to become active within the project and to meet the Federal Minister for the Environment, Svenja Schulze, to ask her questions about the European Green Deal.
