The forest, the climate and us!
Trees and forests are real climate champions. But what do our forests here in Germany have to do with global climate change? How can the exciting connections between forests and climate be illustrated and communicated to children? UfU has been commissioned to implement the project in Saxony-Anhalt as part of the nationwide project “Die Klimakönner” (The climate experts) of the German Forest Protection Association.
The aim of Klimakönner is to establish the importance of forests and climate for people and nature in nurseries and schools. We focus on two-day educational workshops in training centers for prospective educational specialists. With technical and didactic suggestions, participants are motivated and empowered to go into the forest with children more often. We combine the current topic of forests and climate with the social task of education for sustainable development (ESD). A total of 15 training courses are planned in Saxony-Anhalt until fall 2022.
Procedure and methodology
“The climate experts” are two-day training courses with a strong focus on participation and practical application in the forest. In addition to technical input, we show many concrete activities, games and experiments in the forest and provide proven project examples for different age groups. Building on this, participants are coached in developing their own educational activities and project ideas.
Networking and support for participants
The experience gained from the project so far has resulted in 5 Climate Savvy educational brochures in their entirety as a large, comprehensive work manual and reference work: These and the digital version of the educational game “Journey around the world” can be downloaded from www.bildungsserver-wald.de under “Materials”. The 5 brochures can also be ordered free of charge from the SDW online store for a postage fee: https://shop.sdw.de/broschueren.
Forest & Climate Education Network
Network meetings with specialist presentations and information on current topics as well as practical exercises are also part of the project. This promotes the exchange of ideas and experiences and the establishment of contacts and cooperation between participants. A further concern is the transfer and communication on a broader scale and the initiation of joint (nationwide) activities and projects.
The project will conclude in September 2022 with a conference bringing together stakeholders from all over Germany.
