Our ClimateVision project
Example, impressions and impressions of climate protection campaigns and action days at KlimaVisions schools
More than half of the public buildings are schools, making them a decisive factor in achieving Berlin’s climate targets. Due to their large carbon footprint, they act as role models and also play an important role as multipliers. In the “KlimaVisionen” project, schools find their own goals and their own path to a climate-neutral school of the future with the help of external support, workshops and counselling.
The project was honoured as part of the “Climate Protection Partner of the Year 2022” competition.
In 2023, the project also received an award in the UNESCO programme “Education for Sustainable Development: Achieving the Global Sustainable Development Goals (ESD 2030)”
In the first two years of the project, 40 schools took part and designed their own climate roadmaps. Many creative ideas and actions were agreed and then implemented, including climate checks, vision workshops, climate action days, excursions and training courses. Here you can see some impressions of past workshops and activities. Be inspired and become part of the transformation!
ClimateVisions schools take part in city cycling in July 2024
5 schools from the KlimaVisionen project and the UfU cycled a total of 102,301 kilometers with 537 people in July 2024. That’s more than twice around the world! The Emmy-Noether-Gymnasium was one of them. They took 8th place among all teams in Berlin and even 1st place among schools with over 83,000 km and 422 cyclists.
Amazing! We are looking forward to next year and are excited to see if we can beat this distance.
Species Conservation Award of the Berlin Zoo for the Emmy-Noether-Gymnasium, 01.07.2024
Under the patronage of Ms. Lemke, the Federal Minister for the Environment, the Zoos of Berlin’s major species conservation prize was awarded to Berlin schools. First place went to a school from the ClimateVisions project, the Emmy-Noether-Gymnasium: The environment and sustainability team and grade 9b under the direction of Kathrin Krausmann. Their project “Biodiversity Area/Blooming Hedge” was awarded €5,000 in prize money on July 1, 2024 at Tierpark Berlin in Friedrichsfelde Palace.
UfU congratulates on this success.

Networking workshop “Climate protection in schools” with Schule ein Gesicht geben e.V.
What obstacles and possible solutions are there when implementing climate protection campaigns? 26 pupils and teachers from the KlimaVisionen project exchanged ideas on this topic at the networking workshop. Good example projects were discussed as well as support structures for climate protection projects. Of course, the planning of new activities and the exchange of experiences with the other schools were not neglected. With a lot of motivation, we are now ready for implementation!
Teaser: The networking workshop will continue on 24 April. Get in touch with us!
Implementing waste separation at Berlin-Kolleg
Have a look at the video enclosed that accompanies the sustainablity team at Berlin-Kolleg on their initiative to implement waste separation in their school.
FREI DAY – Start of the school year for FREI DAY at Schweizerhof Primary School
For 8 classes from Schweizerhof School, the school year starts with a big kick-off for FREI DAY. FREI DAY?! Every week, the children work on projects of their own choosing that relate to the SDGs. Whether independently or with an organisation, the children are supported in taking a holistic approach to ideas: From idea to concept to realisation to failure or success. They plan, research, argue, try out and present their ideas.
Climate parliament at the Bergmannkiez-school in the school year 2023/2024
Bergmannkiez-school is taking an important step towards anchoring climate action measures within their school routine. The climate parliament was implemented for the first time: At the beginning of the school year, representatives for the climate parliament were elected in addition to the class representatives. Classes 3-7 are represented by two children from each class and are now working on realising their climate vision roadmap for a climate-neutral school.
In the three meetings that have taken place so far, the parliament presidents have been elected, a workshop on sustainability has been held and the first projects have even been implemented. The resolutions of the climate parliament will be presented to the school conference during the school year.
Their first mission is a competition for climate-friendly classrooms to motivate classes to act in a more environmentally conscious way. Criteria were defined by parliament to identify the winners. For example, signs for saving energy and separating waste, creative recycling, e.g. paper trays or flower pots made from rubbish or plants. They also decided on the prizes and appointed the jury members. They then designed their own creations of advertising posters for the competition to spread the idea.
The children particularly enjoyed realising their own ideas and expressing their creative side while designing. They also particularly like the colourful composition of different age groups in the parliament. The representation of each class means that many different opinions and points of view can be brought in.
You can find more information and the parliamentary constitution HERE.
Waste festival – Climate protection action day at the Temple-Grandin primary school on 03.07.2023
Temple-Grandin School turned this year’s summer festival into a waste festival. The entire programme was designed according to the 5Rs of the Zero Waste principle: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink.
A very special eye-catcher was an exhibition by the Upcycling AG: “Sumatra’s elephants, victims of our consumer behaviour”. The school also came up with lots of other great activities, such as a bicycle repair café, several upcycling craft activities: Bags made from old T-shirts, pearl necklaces and notebooks made from waste paper, wallets made from milk cartons, flowers made from egg cartons, bracelets made from wool scraps, a rubbish mandala, a swap/gift exchange, a charity run (proceeds go towards funding paper rubbish bins), a buffet, a raffle and much more.
Climate protection action day at the Primary School am Stadpark Steglitz on 07.06.2023
The whole school was on its feet for the big climate protection action day at Primary School am Stadtpark Steglitz. In the morning, all 450 pupils started together in the sports hall, after which the day continued with 22 sustainability themed and action workshops. Solar robots, fast fashion, a laboratory for visionaries, waste separation, a hands-on exhibition on the energy transition, seed bombs, raw materials for cell phones, climate refugees and cocoa production were just some of the exciting topics.
The day was accompanied by a specially assembled team of student reporters. In between, there was a live vegan barbecue for lunch and a concert for everyone at the end.
You can also see some pictures of the great new school climate garden which was set up together with the Prinzessinnengarten Kollektiv.
“GHO goes GREEN“ – Climate protection action day at the Gustav-Heinemann-Grammar School on 05.06.2023
Together with UfU, the Gustav-Heinemann-Grammar School has embarked on a journey towards becoming a climate-neutral school. In the “GHO goes GREEN” campaign, around 150 pupils, teachers and other school staff wore green T-shirts to show their mindset for sustainability at the GHO and launch the beginning of more climate actions at the school.
The campaign was planned and carried out by the GHO for Future working group and the participants of the climate vision workshop with the aim of raising awareness and motivating the school community to take action on climate protection.
It marks the start of the Climate Visions Action Week at various Berlin schools and offers starting points for further work within the school community as well as for networking with other schools.
Climate change and tree care – climate protection campaign at Anna Seghers School on 16.05.2023
On May 16, 2023, the climate change working group at Anna Seghers School joined forces for a tree care campaign. A lime coating was applied to the badly damaged trunks of the magnificently flowering red thorn trees. This protects the trees against the effects of weathering. In addition, a large part of the tree grates were cleaned and loosened to ensure better water absorption and water bags, sandbags and watering rings were installed. The trees are now watered regularly by the pupils.
