The project consists of organizing and conducting a small film screening series, each followed by a discussion between the director and the audience about the documentary film “Lacoma – der Kohle im Weg” (Lacoma – in the way of coal) – sponsored by the REVIERPIONIER ideas competition.
The approach is to use the medium of film to open up personal and/or emotional approaches to topics of structural change that could not be achieved on a purely cognitive level. In this way, it is possible to initiate discussions in the Central German mining region on topics and stories of transformation that often remain untold. Historically, coal mining and transformation have often been accompanied by consequences such as resettlement, migration, destruction of nature, uncertain future prospects in the local area, and insufficient opportunities for participation, etc.
The film series through various municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt contributes to giving these different experiences a space and enabling exchange. The documentary film chosen by the Umweltgruppe Cottbus (Cottbus environmental group), “Lacoma – der Kohle im Weg”, closely overlaps with the topics of structural change and sustainability, as it addresses a transformation conflict between home (preservation), resettlement, nature conservation, protest culture, and energy policy. There are similarities as well as differences between Lusatia and the Central German mining region – the film builds a bridge between the regions.

Following the approximately 40-minute documentary film, there will be an opportunity to engage in a moderated discussion with the director and/or a contemporary witness, as well as with each other, about questions and impressions raised by the film.
