Search for a nuclear waste repository site

There is no simple solution, but we have to find it!

The teaching materials were first created and published in 2014; they were updated in 2017 following the adoption of the new Site Selection Act. The topic of final disposal of radioactive waste not only affects everyone in Germany at the moment, but also various disciplines. So which lessons is it suitable for? In German, you can hold pro and con debates, in geography you can evaluate the locations and in physics you can look at the physical and technical background to the use of nuclear energy. It is also an extremely political topic. Together with the Öko-Institut e.V., the Independent Institute for Environmental Issues (UfU) has produced educational material that enables pupils to look at the topic from different perspectives in three double lessons. Pupils take on the role of experts and take part in the site search. The teacher’s guide contains a lesson plan and appendix with record sheets, glossary and other materials for the lessons as well as maps with detailed information to print out. At the end of the teacher’s guide, links, literature, films and radio programs are recommended.
