FaBiKli action day

Networking and workshops on the harvesting of façade greening

Date: October 13, 2023
Time: 11:45 a.m., closing from 16:00

Location: Schiller-Gymnasium Berlin, Schillerstr. 125-127, 10625 Berlin
Contact: Dr. Swenja Rosenwinkel

The FaBiKli project – façade greening and biomass production for climate protection at schools – has been carried out by the Independent Institute for Environmental Issues and the Technical University of Berlin since 2021 and is now entering its final year of funding (funded by the BMWK via the National Climate Protection Initiative until July 2024). Participatory façade greening designs were selected at three schools in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, the systems were set up jointly and workshops were held on the topic of façade greening. We would like to report on two instructive years and discuss how we can succeed in greening the façades of Berlin and beyond. Because it wasn’t just the students who learned a lot, we did too.

In order to make Berlin’s transformation into a climate-neutral and climate-adapted city a success, various stakeholders need to work together at many levels (administration, neighborhood management, architects, planners, representatives of environmental associations, schools, housing companies and energy suppliers). We want to build on this cooperation with our day of action or encourage it, because many questions arise when it comes to façade greening alone: who builds it, how is it watered, who takes care of the plants, what happens to the biomass, what effect does greening have as an energy-saving measure, on well-being or air quality, what influence does the vegetation have on the building façade and who finances such measures?

We want to work together to find answers to these questions and then head to the façade to harvest the greenery together.

From 12:00 noon, the scientific findings gained in the project on the subject of façade greening and the educational work carried out will be presented by those involved in the project. This will be followed by short presentations highlighting the topic from the areas of funding (Dr. Stock, Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment), neighborhood management, architecture and education. There will then be time for discussion.

After a coffee and cake break, we will start the practical part of the day at 14:00. We will harvest the façade greening together with schoolchildren and hold small workshops to bring the effects of façade greening to life and learn a lot about the plants used while harvesting and drawing, such as their potential to generate energy or contribute to biodiversity conservation in the city. Parallel to the workshops, there will be the opportunity to exchange ideas at the climate protection exhibition. From 16:00, we will round off the day of action with a freshly harvested hop and bean soup.

The event is aimed at stakeholders on the topic of façade greening and biomass utilization, followed by workshops and a façade greening harvest festival together with pupils and teachers.
