Future Lab: We are Water defending itself! Water justice and sealing

Long periods of drought, a Tesla plant in Brandenburg or the increasing sealing of large cities. The lowering of groundwater levels in the still active lignite mining areas in eastern Germany is making the issue of fair access to water increasingly visible, both in rural and urban areas. In this Future Lab, we will look at the water struggles in the lignite mining areas, but also worldwide. We will explore the question of what role water justice plays for climate-friendly structural change in eastern Germany and how we can take action ourselves.

After arriving together, we will start on Friday afternoon with a workshop by the Climate Collective, which will include current examples of struggles for water justice and especially the international perspective. In the evening, Reka from the environmental group in Cottbus will report on the situation in Lusatia. On Saturday, we will then visit a backyard that has been redesigned as part of the “Green Courtyards” project and the citizens’ initiative Bürgerbahnhof Plagwitz to see how the water and sealing problems in Leipzig are being tackled in concrete terms.
