The built environment as a place of cohabitation – What can architecture contribute to the preservation of biodiversity?

This is the core question of the “Architecture + Biodiversity” symposium – an interdisciplinary exchange with a pioneering character.

Urban areas have long been regarded as hotspots of biodiversity. Buildings are important habitats for many animal species. Building responsibly therefore not only means designing climate-friendly urban development. Today, architects can play a key role in promoting biodiversity through the design of buildings.

Together with architects and leading scientists, we discussed what an ecologically sustainable building culture could look like:

  • What solutions and best practice examples already exist?
  • What hurdles still stand in the way of interspecies-based architecture and how can they be overcome?

The all-day, free symposium took place on September 27 from 09:00 to 17:00 at the German Architecture Center (DAZ) and virtually and was aimed at architects, project developers, building owners, housing companies and other interested parties. You can find the program
here
. The conference is recognized by the Berlin Chamber of Architects and other chambers nationwide as suitable further training with 8 teaching units. The documentation of the event can be found here.
